Background

The long-term survival of business families, their companies and their surrounding business systems are becoming more complex as innovations from new technologies, distant markets and disruptive business models enter formerly unchallenged domains of the business families. There are also increased venturing options available. How best can you choose the strategy that works best for your family and business?

Master Class Workshop

The Master Class Workshop, organized by FBN Academy, offers participants the opportunity to learn cutting-edge concepts of long-term stability and growth for business families through innovation & venturing. This is relevant for Family Businesses who are looking to continue wealth creation in their businesses by passing on entrepreneurial mindset and capabilities from one generation to the next.

The workshop looks at existing resources and capabilities that a family can use that are unique to both their family and businesses, to achieve continued entrepreneurial success, as well as manage risks from evolving market forces. Case studies and real-life examples will be used to explore how best to innovate and venture for long-term business sustainability.

  • Understand how business families can use entrepreneurial initiatives, investments, partnerships, technologies and business models to ensure sustainability and pan-generational transition of their firms and their wealth.
  • Explore why some business families succeeded or failed in their venturing attempts.
  • Map out how families in business can utilize their unique capabilities to achieve long-term growth through innovation and venturing.

Learning Objectives 

  • Increase understanding of differing innovation and venturing models.
  • Leverage on core capabilities and competencies of the family and business.
  • Learn some tools and frameworks to manage the differing risks and challenges businesses face.

About Prof. Dr. Marc-Michael H. Bergfeld MarcBergfeldProf. Dr. Bergfeld is Professor of Global Entrepreneurship & Family Firms at Munich Business School and heads Courage Partners Group, an international advisory and execution boutique serving leading family businesses, private equity-controlled firms, and global corporations. Courage specialises in long-term strategy, innovation & investment, and runs an own specialist think tank, the Courage Center of Global Entrepreneurship & Family Firms at Munich Business School.

 

At Munich Business School, Prof Bergfeld is the Academic Director of EMBA programmes. He educates and mentors many of Germany’s next generation family business leaders, and leaders in global organizations. In addition, he educates family business leaders in Asia and the Americas. At Courage Partners, he advises leading family conglomerates, global corporations and private equity funds, sovereign funds and family offices on long-term strategy, corporate entrepreneurship, innovation and alternative venture investments. Prof Bergfeld has served in management consulting functions and family businesses in EU, US and emerging markets, for example as Senior Programme Manager International Innovation at Giesecke & Devrient, the leading private fiduciary printing and security technology firm.

Prof. Dr. Bergfeld holds a Ph.D. from Manchester Business School with external supervision through Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, a Diplom-Kaufmann’s degree from Ingolstadt School of Management at the Catholic University of Eichstaett and Executive Education in Venture Capital & Private Equity from Harvard Business School. His work has been published in Boutellier, Gassmann, von Zedtwitz (2008): Managing Global Innovation (3rd edition), IJEIM (International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management), ZfKE (Zeitschrift für Klein- & Mittelständische Unternehmen & Entrepreneurship) and publications such as Private Wealth Magazine and Imperium Magazine.

Prof . Dr. Bergfeld authored “Global Innovation Leadership”. It is commended as “new school of thought on how to outperform your competitors in the race for innovation and markets”,(Franz M. Haniel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Haniel & Cie.GmbH).  It draws upon experience from innovation projects and a two-year benchmarking process between BMW, Rolls-Royce, Infineon Technologies and Giesecke & Devrient.
